Event: Selling Zongzi for Jene Wah’s Building Repairs

$2.50 for a zongzi (Chinese tamale) may not seem much to offset the projected expenses to fix the lighting, the toilet, and the roof of Jene Wah’s building, but it works. The collective energy put in by both the young and the elderly for the repair project is tremendous. Together they planned the purchase of materials, laid out the zongzi making procedure, and organized the volunteer workers. In one day, they have transformed 250 pounds of glutinous rice, 30 pounds of peanuts, 17.5 pounds of mung beans, Chinese sausage, salted pork and egg yolk into nine hundred (900) zongzi ready for distribution on or before June 9, which is Duanwu (the fifth day of the fifth moon by the lunar calendar) this year.

This is the biggest repair project since Jene Wah moved into the present building in 1996. The cost can easily amass to well over forty thousand US dollars. Fortunately, Berkman Hong came forth to assume full responsibility for all the interior repair and remodeling including, but not limited to, the wiring and lighting, the bathrooms, the walls and carpet to honor his mother, Judy Hong who has generously devoted hours, weeks, months, and years to Jene Wah, Inc. as a volunteer and working Board member. Judy, like many other Jene Wah seniors, had taught their children well by way of example.

今年的端午節是西曆的六月九日。早就聽說振華的長者們要包粽子為維修房宇而籌款。才六月一日就已經有人開始浸粽葉。在午餐桌上還聽見大家討論醃三十磅鹹豬肉夠不夠包五百條鹹肉粽，而臘腸是否用整條還是開邊等細節。幾位負責人調兵遣將，算計糧草，頗有大將之風。

一天下來，250磅的糯米，30磅的花生，17.5磅的綠豆，30包的粽葉等材料，已被處理成900條肉粽和鹼水粽，成績斐然。

振華維修的幾個大項目，包括廁所、屋頂、電燈等，估計要四萬美元。因湯伯垣和湯趙碧霞的幼子Berkman認捐了全部屋頂以外的費用，故內部工程已開工，屋頂也找了人來估價，一切都進行得熱火朝天。我們會繼續向熱心的振華長者，有孝心敬老的年青人報導維修及籌款各階段的進展。
